Children and families are a pretty big part of the Shrimp & Petroleum Festival and we have plenty of activities to keep them entertained all weekend long.
The Children's Village is open Saturday and Sunday of the festival weekend. Each child who visits leaves with a prize, and we never charge anyone that enters! The Village is a magical, hands-on adventure land that houses numerous activities for children to experience. The Village opens at 1:00 PM each day.
Saturday of the festival weekend is designated "Children's Day." Yes, we think children are so important that we give them their "own" day with many events and Children's Day Royalty! The day begins at 9:00 AM with field events and games in Lawrence Park. Kids compete for awards and have a great time! Following the field events (about 10:00 AM), professional storytellers delight the kids with colorful and creative storytelling.
Then it is on to the Children's Day Mini Street Parade... yes, a parade! At 11:00 AM on Saturday, the children meet in front of the Historic Downtown Post Office with bikes, wagons, carts, just everything imaginable (including themselves) colorfully decorated. The parade winds its way through the Historic District to Lawrence Park, where prizes are awarded for the best decorated floats and costumes.
And all weekend long children can enjoy the carnival rides and games by Mitchell Brothers Amusements. The carnival is open 5:00 to 11:00 PM on Thursday, 5:00 PM to midnight on Friday, noon to midnight on Saturday and Sunday, and noon to 9:00 PM on Monday. Take advantage of Pay One Price ride bracelets for $25 on Thursday from 5:00 to 9:00 PM and on Monday from noon to 9:00 PM.
